This toy looks good but you can hear more with your own ears that with this device. It has a parabolic reflector but the microphone faces away from the reflector, therefore the reflector has no directional or amplifying effect at all. There is no volume control and it has a very poor frequency response. I can't believe that National Geographic put their name on this rip-off.
Check out the Slinky Science Bionic Ear Slinky Science Bionic Ear but read the first review. http://www.amazon.com/review/R182WYVJ4BOP0W/ref=cm_cr_pr_viewpnt#R182WYVJ4BOP0W He enlarged the entry ports to the microphone and was able to greatly increase the amount of sound being focused by the parabolic dish. Find the location by momentarily pointing the dish toward the sun and watching where the light is focused equally around the central support. He has other useful information about the technology.
